What is Low Level Laser Therapy?

Low level laser therapy has been demonstrated effective in the treatment of a variety of painful and inflamed conditions of the soft tissues and joints. Laser therapy can be safely used as an adjunct or replacement for pharmaceutical drugs. It targets the underlying problem, as well as the symptoms, resulting in sustained benefits.

The Science

Low Level LASER Therapy is also known as photobiomodulation. LLLT uses infrared light to reduce inflammation, ease pain and promote healing. It entails the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near infrared) to generate a photochemical response in damaged or dysfunctional tissue. It changes the condition of damaged tissue by stimulating cellular metabolism thereby accelerating the healing process. The LASER works by creating an increase of blood supply (vasodilation), increasing oxygen within the cells and cellular energy. As the light pours into the tissue, photons will be scattered, reflected, and absorbed by the
mitochondria. ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) production is stimulated within the cells helping them to have the energy it needs to function normally. The pain reflex is broken, offering immediate relief of pain. What to expect? Laser therapy is a non-invasive technique to help reduce pain and inflammation. Laser therapy treatments must be administered directly to skin, as laser light cannot penetrate through layers of clothing. You will feel a soothing warmth as the light is administered. Laser therapy treatments lasts between 15minutes to 45 minutes depending on the condition being treated.

Is LLLT painful?

No, the therapy is painless and totally non-invasive.

Is Low Level Therapy safe?

The FDA has proven that the therapy is safe. The only contraindication (warning) is for use directly in the eye.

Is the laser FDA approved?

Yes, the laser was first approved on Feb. 11, 2002, for the treatment and management of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This pain relief treatment is FDA cleared and enables patients to have an alternative to drugs and surgery. Over 100 million individual patient treatments and 700 successful clinical trials have proven PBM effective and safe How many treatments are required before I see results? Patients generally see improvement/changes within the first 24 hours. Your practitioner will develop a treatment plan that is optimal for your condition.

Committed to progress

LLLT has been used for 30 years in the UK, Europe, Canada, North and South America. It is well supported by clinical research. LLLT is used by Harvard medical School, NASA, US special forces, the British Olympic
Athletic Team, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Formula 1 and over 20 US Pro Sports franchises such as NIKE. There are no known side effects from LASER therapy and the results are long lasting.
